High School students win first prize for a project about DerMap at the national competition Fabbricando 2011 - Schools meet business
The cooperation between Marinelli high school and DerMap, was a success: the project was carried out by the students attending their 4th year at high school and the ICT company, which was established thanks to the Techno Seed incubator at Friuli Innovazione Science and Technology Park "Luigi Danieli" in Udine. The result was a first prize at the national competition “Fabbricando 2011: schools meet business”, promoted by ABS (Bertoli Safau Steelworks).
DerMap started a small “lab” where the students could get in touch with the technology and production processes that characterize an innovative start-up company.
The competition rewards concrete ideas, projects and products resulting from the encounter among students and entrepreneurs who exchange views on scientific research and the world of business. DerMap Srl is specialized in IT for environmental monitoring; for this reason it was chosen by the students as a partner for the competition. Their first prize is a visit to the Deutsches Museum in Munich (Germany).
The goal was the production of a work with a strong innovative component. The students from Marinelli high school realized a project called “A View From Above” which describes the satellite remote sensing technology applied to the improvement of traditional economic activities in our region (viticulture) and to the support for public health with the detection of asbestos rooftops. The project features opinion polls among businesses which could be interested in the technology.
“We are very happy for this success – says Daniele Gulic, Chairman of DerMap – we decided to work with these boys and girls to introduce them to technologies that aren’t popular yet. The basis of this work is a project Dermap realized for the satellite remote sensing of the Bay of Kotor (Montenegro) and a ten-year experience as university researchers. This project resulted in our plan for the establishment of the first laboratory for satellite remote sensing analysis in Friuli Venezia Giulia for environmental monitoring, energy planning, agriculture and health care.”
Fabio Feruglio, Director of Friuli Innovazione, expresses his satisfaction as well: “There are hundreds of students visiting the Park every year; we encourage this initiative since we consider it very useful to establish a direct and proactive contact with schools in our territory and have students meet the world of research and business. We are confident this experience will start a cooperation with schools, Marinelli high school to begin with; we also hope we will be able to start a series of programmes with teachers during next year".
